This city, established some 2500 years ago, is right at the heart of this Mediterranen area. Agde grew up from maritime trade in ancient times and is a very typical city of the Languedoc region: Lively, with its shady promenades, busy small caf�s, medieval lanes and commerce.

The best view of this small town is from the bridge over the "H�rault" river, where the Canal du Midi begins. Agde is near to the extinct volcano Mont Saint Loup and its houses are built from this volcanic rock, as is the massive Cath�drale St. Etienne (12 century), whose walls are two to three metres thick. The 35 metres tall bell tower was also used for defence in former times whose walls are thick two to three meters. The 35 meters defense mechanisms have high bell tower.

In the old part of town there are various collections relating to the history of the town and to its nautical connections, including a beautiful collection of Greek amphora from the old port
