km to the west of Bziers is situated the highly interesting prehistoric remains of a settlement ( 6th century bc.) It is located on a 120 m hill, from which there are wonderful views. Excavations have revealed the foundations of houses and town walls. There are priceless relics such as household items, religious objects, weapons, gold etc to be seen in a museum there. T
his old water course runs from Toulouse right into the Bassin de Thau along the coast of Languedoc. Together with the Garonne canal it connects the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. Houseboats can travel along this canal. The total length of the canal is 240 km, along which are to be seen 64 locks, 55 aqueducts, seven canal bridges and 126 other bridges.

The gigantic task of building the canal was started in the year 1666 with the assistance of 12,000 workers, who toiled for 14 years with picks and shovels. Since, at that time, ships were hauled along the canal with the aid of horses, you can still find to this day paths along the Canal du Midi, ideal as cycle tracks.

7. Gorges du Tarn

T
he journey through the Gorges du Tarn, whether from Florac to Millau or vice versa, lets you see some of the wonders of nature in France. The river has carved out a ravine some 400-500 metres deep into the white chalk of the Cevennen and created fantastic shapes in the cliffs. There has been a road running alongside the Tarn since the beginning of the 20th century, and this is very close to the steep cliff face. Thereafter, there are tunnels and arches. On the opposite bank you can see here and there weather-beaten houses with tile roofs, clustering close together, which can only be reached by river boats.
